We are helping take hunger out of the equation.
Together, we can make a difference- one meal at a time.
Project Bread was formed under the premise that hunger is a problem that solicits a comprehensive solution. Established in Massachusetts, Project Bread is the only state-wide anti-hunger organization that is committed to providing people from all walks of life access to healthy food, providing sustainable and reliable solutions for everyone in need.
This organization takes a two-pronged approach to addressing the problem of hunger: providing immediate relief and working on eradicating the systemic causes of hunger as well.
For immediate relief to those who are hungry today, Project Bread:
INVESTS in community solutions across the state, including 263 food pantries, local farms, community gardens;
PILOTS innovative programming that gives access to healthy, nutritious food, such as Chefs in School Program;
SCALES programming that is impactful, such as breakfast before the bell, summer meals;
INFORMS people of food resources available in the community, through their hotline and outreach workers in 26 community health centers.
To eradicate the systemic causes of hunger by:
EDUCATING the public about the impact of hunger in Massachusetts and the associated public health impacts;
RESEARCHING the causes of hunger and the high-risk areas and populations, and assessing the impact of programs through partnership with higher education institutions;
ORGANIZING individuals to raise their voices through their Annual Walk for Hunger, and foster engagement within communities statewide to create and anti-hunger movement;
ADVOCATING for policy solutions that both increase eligibility and access to hunger relief programs, and addressing the key causes of hunger in the state- including wages, costs of housing and children.
Since the time Project Bread was created, it has made an astounding impact on the community:
303 | Cities and towns (out of 251) that are home to callers struggling to put food on their tables
• 29,233 | Calls the FoodSource Hotline responded to during the last year
• 85,781 | Students introduced to healthy lunches through Chefs in Schools program over the past three years
• 2.7M | The number of free summer meals that children and teens received
• Over $100M | Emergency funds raised by the Walk for Hunger and distributed by Project Bread to Massachusetts food programs, feeding hungry individuals and families since 1969
